• What is the standard for interoperability between Information Management Systems and Virtual Learning Environments?
• What does “embedded” mean in the context of MIS data in learning platforms?
• What is real time reporting - how detailed will it be?
• What has happened to SIF [Schools Interoperability Framework]?
• What level of detail is required in terms of the interface between learning platforms and management information systems?
Feedback points:
• A standard needs to be agreed and implemented soon, before schools make a significant investment in proprietary solutions
• Becta and DCSF are taking a paper on interoperability, and specifically the Schools Interoperability Framework, to the DCSF Board in March. Further information will be made available on this following that meeting. Discussions on progress with proof of concept and pilot activity on SIF will be taking place at the next SIFA UK conference on 12th and 13th March. Details will be available on the SIFA UK website http://www.sifinfo.org.uk
• Real time reporting presents a key interoperability challenge around the creation of parental accounts for logon to real time reporting solutions, taking the details from the MIS
• Challenges around 14-19, with students spending time in a number of institutions. Attendance and assessment data need to be available to the “home” institution
• There is an opportunity (available only in the short term before it is lost) to use the needs generated by the wider children’s services agenda to drive the uptake of interoperability - “merging” data across education, social care and other systems
• Parental expectations are driving some of the demand for interoperability and real time reporting - it is important that customers (e.g. LAs and schools) express this demand to their supplier partners
• As well as the technical aspects of interoperability, the importance of cultural change within institutions was raised. For example, it is not sustainable for schools to use paper systems for behaviour management and transfer to MIS or VLE after the event - this will not provide the necessary information for real time reporting to parents.
